Recently, many students across Katy ISD have been petitioning the district to reduce the amount of homework assigned to students. These students felt like the homework was excessive and useless. Students should accept the amount of homework assigned.

 

Homework reinforces lessons taught in the classroom. In subjects like mathematics, homework gives students different types of problems and encourages critical thinking. As the old adage says, “practice makes perfect.”

 

When teachers are making tests, they often pull questions from previous homework assignments and put them in the test. Doing homework helps students study and prepare for their test. Without homework, students would take the test without an idea of what is going to be on it.

 

Homework also reinforces many important life skills. Teenagers have a tendency to sweep tasks to the side when they deem them “boring” or pointless. This habit will hinder their growth when they enter the professional world. When students graduate and find a job, they will have to learn to finish tasks that they do not want to do.

 

Many homework dissidents believe that homework is a useless regurgitation of what they learned in class. In reality, teachers assign homework to help their students succeed in their class, not to purposefully torture their students. The district has already begun to lessen the homework load by guaranteeing a no homework day once a month on the proposed calendar for the next school year. The problem roots from student’s ability to manage their time wisely. Students leave homework packets until last minute, instead of spreading the work out evenly.

 

Homework helps, not hinders, a student’s performance by reinforcing skills and refreshing information from the class.
